Paul started to play bass in 1984 at the age of 16 when his desire to play jazz could only be fulfilled by taking up another instrument. (At that time he had been playing the flute for a number of years). An after school jazz big band was in need of a bassist and Paul said that he could fulfill that role. He then borrowed a bass on a Sunday afternoon and joined in a rehearsal on the Monday night. Not the recommended approach to taking up an instrument, but one which proved to be a grounding in jazz for this young musician.
Since that first intense rehearsal Paul continued to play in the band until he left school.
Up to this day Paul has played in numerous jazz / big bands and quintets. He has played with the All Souls Orchestra; as a pit musician in many local shows; appeared on one or two recordings; played in numerous Christian worship bands; and more....
Paul spends much of his time teaching a variety of instruments. He also currently plays in a jazz trio.
Paul's ability to sight read is a great asset for session recordings.
